I am interested in this car on eBay (link) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201051835737? ... 1423.l2649

It has suspected HG failure (pressurizing coolant system) It looks a very nice car with only 53k on the clock, BUT....I'm guessing it is a majorly expensive job to have the HG done, plus belts water pump gaskets etc etc....been quoted £1000 to have it done....is this a lot....also is there anybody in the club willing to take this job on for a realistic amount of money locally (Worthing, Sussex).....i was hoping around the 550-600 pounds mark.....its such a shame to see a car like this broken...or would a replacement engine be a better option....again, anyone fancy taking this on?

Yours hopefully :prayer: :)

Unless it's been boiled, more likely to be a stuck thermostat.inoperative cooling fan, so could be as little as £200 to fix! ;)

Sadly, buying any car like this is very much a lottery, because as you say, if it IS the head gaskets, you're unlikely to get much change out of £1,000, PLUS you still need to find out why they blew in the 1st place! :(

As above, it's a V6, so head gasket failure is unlikely, more likely to be no low-speed cooling fan, or a leaky plastic thermostat housing, or possibly the inlet manifold gaskets - but you never know, so it's a bit of a risk.

The problem is, you'll get the asking price simply by selling the wheels and interior! :(

The goal is to help alter perceptions of the cars, that they are worth spending the time and money on, whilst ever current owners accept that how things are is OK, then things won't change and we'll begin to see what it's really like to struggle keeping your car on the road.

Yes agreed Jake.....doesnt help when the cost to repair is so high....i dont think i am up to doing head gasket as not versed on this engine at all....give me an old Vauxhall 2.3 slant 4 & i'm ok. My local MG/Rover garage are £600 just for belts....
