Rover 75 Saloon

Post Number:#1  Post by KDA4G » May 26th, 2020, 1:07

Over the next few weeks our Rover 75 Saloon will be coming up for sale.

It’s a Club SE 4-door Saloon in Copperleaf Red, with 2.0 V6 engine and manual transmission, cruise control, wood rim steering wheel, powered rear blind, and Contour alloy wheels. The mileage is just under 26,000 and increasing slowly.

It was first registered by MG Rover on 7th March 2001, and then bought from a former main dealer with about 8,000 miles on the clock. It has had a pretty good service history since then. The main belts were changed and an oil service carried out a couple of years ago, in May 2018, by Kerridges, a former main dealer in Suffolk. The car has a continuous on-the-road MoT history, until the current Coronavirus emergency. It still has the original three-speed engine cooling fan, and fully working VIS motors, as far as we know.

There are several other items and accessories which will either be included with the vehicle, or for sale separately, depending on how things go.

I will post some more details on here over the next few days. If you think you might be interested, please get in touch through the forum private mail system.

Update: The car now has twelve months’ MoT from the end of May 2020, with no advisories, apart from a nail in one of the rear tyres. These are being replaced - see below.

Build date

This vehicle came off the assembly line at Longbridge on Tuesday 27th February 2001.

A total of 6,600 body shells were sent from Cowley up to Longbridge in late 2000, and the VIN suggests that this would have been one of that batch - so possibly one of the last bodyshells built at Cowley, but with final paint, assembly, and trim all carried out at Longbridge. Either way, it was too early for any Project Drive modifications, as far as we know, but it is not quite the standard Club SE specification either.

Original sale price

The full retail price for the 2.0 V6 Club SE saloon, back in 1999, was £21,350. This was reduced to £19,115 in October 2000, with separately priced options that could be added on, such as:
Pearlescent paint ..... £450
Cruise control ..... £225
CD autochanger ..... £325
Wood rim steering wheel ..... £200
Powered rear blind ..... £200
Full size spare wheel ..... £50

So the full retail price for this specification in March 2001 would have been about £20,565 or, allowing for inflation, around £34,250 today.

Exterior

The exterior is mostly standard Club SE specification, apart from the headlights and the alloy wheels.
It has the later type of ‘Projector’ style headlights (halogen, not Xenon). These are very good for night driving in rural areas. The windscreen has been replaced once, quite recently. This also gives a clear view at night - they do become a little less transparent over time, due to weathering.
The alloy wheels are 15-inch 6.5J 8-spoke Contours. Together with the 205/65 R15 tyre size, they give a very comfortable ride and good roadholding.

Interior

Light Smokestone / Ash Grey trim
Speckle velour cloth seats with headrests
Burr walnut veneer dash (not plastic)
Matching wood rim steering wheel with audio and cruise controls
Walnut effect (plastic) cap on gear lever
Leather handbrake grip (not vinyl)
Internal electric boot lid release button
Driver and passenger front and rear cupholders
Illuminated vanity mirrors on sun visors, both sides
Early type high-quality door seals and carpets throughout
Non-folding rear seats (fold down with pull-tapes only)
Air conditioning with automatic temperature control

Interior-01.jpg
Yes, the press photograph is LHD, but the car isn’t, and no, it does not have powerfold door mirrors fitted:
Interior-02.jpg

This is the early type Rover branded Philips Harmony radio/cassette player, with the 6-CD autochanger custom fitted in the boot, and the optional rear door tweeters. The original microphone insert is present in the interior light, but it is not functional.
Interior-03.jpg

There are two magazines for the CD player, so that it’s quick to change over if there are two drivers, or if it’s a long journey.
It’s mounted vertically, so that CDs don’t get stuck inside, which has been known to happen when it is fitted horizontally.

You can’t have too many cup-holders...

I always thought that Club SE's came with Unions, was the car ordered with Contours, or have they been changed?

Good point - thanks for mentioning it.
Yes, Unions were standard fit for the Club SE. They were shown in some of the overseas press photos, in particular BMW / Rover Deutschland, as they were intended to suggest the Union Jack and emphasise the ‘Britishness’ of the car. But they are difficult to keep clean, and not as comfortable as the 15” wheels on the Connoisseur. So these were changed very early on.

The Contours were available as an option, presumably at no extra cost, and could have been ordered as original equipment. The Accessory price list for December 2001 shows:
15” 8 Spoke Contour .... £650 set of four, fitted, inc. VAT
16” Multispoke Union .... £690 set of four, fitted, inc VAT

As well as being more comfortable, they bring the styling more into line with the pictures in the press kit:

Update: Following on from the MoT, the car now has four new tyres, and the wheels have been cleaned and re-balanced:

Wheels-03.jpg
Roadstone Eurovis HP02 205/65 R15 94V

This is not a premium tyre, but not a bad compromise for low mileage use. With the wheels just re-balanced, it rides quite nicely.
The spare tyre is the same make, with plenty of tread depth, but several years older and not in such good condition.

wildrover (view post) wrote:A very well presented add, only question: what is the price?

Thanks for taking an interest - still weighing this up, there are not as many low mileage cars as there used to be.

For example:
2000 Connoisseur SE 2.5 Automatic, 40,000 miles, £3,995.
https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1177299

2006 Connoisseur SE 2.5 Automatic, 24,000 miles, £5,250.
https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1234059

The 2.0 V6 is less common. It works well with the manual transmission, and cruise control also seems to help with getting better fuel economy on longer journeys. It is slightly more economical than the 2.5, and returns about 30mpg (manufacturer’s combined cycle), compared with maybe 25mpg for the 2.5 with automatic transmission. The car tax rate is the same in both cases, currently £325 per year.

Mobile phone

The phone holder bracket can be slotted in, to replace the left hand cup-holder. The Siemens S55, like most phones now, has bluetooth.
Interior-08.jpg

Navigation

The Garmin Nuvi 3598 has a 5-inch touchscreen display, lifetime maps update, bluetooth, and a built in microphone and loudspeaker. It also has voice activation.
Garmin-01.jpg

The map display and spoken route instructions are pretty good.
Garmin-03.jpg

It picks up the Siemens S55 phone over bluetooth, so the phone doesn’t need any wires or cables. Voice activated dialling can be used (when parked).
Garmin-05.jpg

Diagnostics

There is another Garmin bluetooth device, which plugs into the diagnostic socket - it’s handy sometimes to have battery voltage and coolant temperature displayed.
Garmin-06.jpg

It also displays fuel economy, driving characteristics, and basic fault codes for MoT emissions testing, etc.
Garmin-07.jpg
Garmin-08.jpg

Quite similar to what MG Rover had in mind back in 2005:
Interior-mobile.jpg

The Garmin nuvi stows away neatly in the centre console when not in use.
Garmin-09.jpg

Tyre pressure monitor

One more bluetooth device is this after market tyre pressure monitor. It uses a sensor on each tyre valve to send a signal to the diaplay, and can also sound an alarm.
Interior-TPMS.jpg

Interior-05.jpg

This was removed when the new tyres were fitted.

I’ve added a couple of pictures of people to the above post.
The first picture is a rather young looking Richard Woolley, but can anyone confirm that the second photo is Wyn Thomas, please?
The third one is Gordon Poynter on the left.
Lots of other people, of course...

Just for fun, a model specific handbook...
- Cover matches the other handbooks.
- Contains the 2.0 V6 Club SE specification, tyre pressures, capacities, etc. along with the build record, across 16 pages.
