Interesting, did NOT know that modern cars with an ECU, engine 'management' etc could run on - I'd have thought that turning the ignition off would stop the ECU sending signals to the coil packs to do their stuff - although I admit that I know very little about how the electronics works.

Zeb wrote:So did I...until I tried a 1.8 cam sensor and the plug didn't fit! Looks like they are different between Mk1 and Mk2 as mine has 3 wires coming off it to a rectangular connecting block. :-(

The cam sensor should be the same, but the flyaway lead differs. I had a couple of variations for sale on ebay (now sold) and think I have one left in my personal stash but if I remember rightly, two had different leads coming off. I wasn't brave enough to try and disconnect them to compare.... ;)

Hmmm...might be worth me digging out the part numbers! Different for the 2.0 to the 2.5 but both fit / work!

Post Number:#51  Post by Zeb » February 28th, 2014, 4:48

Firstly, a BIG THANKS to Mofo for furnishing me with a new cam sensor! All working! :-D

The car still has a bit of a starting issue in that it starts and runs but after being switched off and eventually stopping, it is less than keen to restart unless the battery is disconnected then reconnected again! Am still hmming and haaing about the manifold noises too...they come n go..and there is definitely lumpy running below 2000rpm. All to be sorted along with its ability to continue to run after the ignition key is removed.

More investigations today....

I was wondering if the electrical gremlins might be from this area given the tell-tale signs of a water leak. It was possible the tow-bar smart box was also in this vicinity given it wasn't in the wheel-well.

Taking the interior trim out it became clear that the rear quarter light had been smashed at some point and nobody had bothered to get all the glass out! Possibly a less than perfect fit of the new one is the culprit for the water leak?

Quite a puddle had been building up!

Alas, the smart box was well hidden in the back of the light cluster instead and so was not suffering water ingress. A pity as now I have to start looking all over again for the cause of this mysterious running on.

Still, the glass is out, the water is out, things are drying and the tow bar disconnected so progress of sorts!

A couple of possibilities:
- Was there any funny wiring for the after-market radio, maybe spliced into the loom somewhere ?
- Is it an automatic, and is there anything odd going on between the auto box ECU and the immobiliser ?

It's a manual and I have removed the radio to rule it out...no splicing that I came across. However the garage have had the steering column apart...!

Would be a world first if that's the case. My money is some spurious wiring somewhere.

Do the ignition lights turn off when you turn the ignition off yet the car runs on?

Ok, so that post hoping for a quick and easy resolution was famous last words!

However.......

I write this from the KwikFit MOT testing station in Skeggy.... ;-)

A comprehensive write up will appear in the somewhat belated issue 3 of the Enthusiasts' magazine.... It has been a long labour of love to get this far...and wouldn't have managed it without Jake and PhilT4.

I am holding out for a pass natch! :D
