Most probably yes. It seems that Rimmer has some in stock at the moment, but when I was looking at replacing mine, it was available as "built-to-order" only.

Well the car is off the road for the time being due to developing a tappet rattle type noise that doesn't clear. Judging by the colour of the oil that came out after 1200 miles, my guess is that there's been a build up somewhere, hopefully the strainer. The hoses between the oil cooler and sump have also started to collapse due to age.

We were going to have to change the exhaust anyway, so we're killing two birds with one stone. I'll naturally put some photos up as we're doing it.

Yes Jake, hoses do become cracked and a tappet can go and oil seals too, as the car becomes older. I once used the term 'age related' in a post in reference to LJW and was sent a pm by a fellow member who tore a strip off me for using these words. Ever since then, I have worked my way round this as the words 'age related' had made him feel upset. Linked to this was, a doctor had told him that a member of his family had an age related problem when in fact it was not a problem due to age, but was a problem caused by cancer which sadly proved fatal. I accept the reasons for his anger in losing his loved one like that. A man I respect, but it does show how people can easily become offended by a few well meant words.

Evening Phil,

Thankfully all the cam seals were replaced when the belts were done! The hoses I think had gone dry whilst the car sat and the 1400 odd miles the car has done in the last 6 weeks has perhaps been a little too much too soon!

I'd like to think that folks here will read your posts in context to the matter in hand. As a result, people should be able to use whatever choice of words they feel comfortable with and are able to do so without such fallout as you've described.

Afternoon All,
Have info on the Exhaust Rear Boxes which may clarify a few of the above points.
The Shells are produced off original tooling, albeit in China now, the assembly is built in the UK ( Not by Caterpillar ) for XPart stock.
There are 10 part numbers in the range covering all the 75 and ZT varients which used the Clam Shell rear box.

A bit of an udpate, as of the 27th of June.

Upon draining the oil, we found that not only was the oil practically diesel-levels of black and contained lots of carbon lumps. Considering the car has only done 1200 miles since its overhaul, this was fairly worrying. A change of oil and filter was carried out and ran for 60 miles, when the tapping started again. Drain the oil and as before, very dirty and with lots of carbon-esque lumps.

We dropped the sump, strainer and cooler pipes to find a good inch and a half of sludge in the sump, so my guess is that the previous services have seen the oil abstracted through a PELA pump, as opposed to the old fashioned way. The strainer was also removed, and upon removal demonstrated that it was blocked by covering us in oil, so this, along with the sump was cleaned and refitted.

We then ran a engine flush additive with a fresh load of 10w40, which produced even more crap, so ran a dedicated load of comma engine flush. We then drained and filled with fresh oil and a new filter and so far the tappet noise has disappeared. The car will be monitored over the next few weeks, with another oil change in 500 miles time.

As well, however as suspected, the pipes that feed between the oil cooler and the sump had perished due to years of little to no usage. Both were replaced with genuine parts, supplied by XPart, many thanks!

Whilst the car was on stands, we took the opportunity to fit a complete new exhaust system. Although not of an original design, it was available at an advantageous price, and was better than the barrel the car had fitted.

Whilst in the air, I was able to get a good look under the car and was impressed with its condition overall. Sadly both sills have been damaged by grease monkeys at some point in the cars life, so work will be required on adding damaged underseal. There is some light corrosion around the n/s rear jacking point, which will be investigated into further.

This has set back planned works on getting the bodywork rectified for events later on in the year, however, we still plan to have the car looking a little more presentable towards the end of the year.

I'm glad you've brought the danger of using a Pela style pump for oil changes, on cars that weren't designed for it! :hail:

The reason you drain the oil from the sump is for the very reasons that you mention, as it can NEVER remove all the sludge that goes with it!

I'm sure the motor will be fine, just keep an eye on it and drain and re-fill if you get any more problems.
